Baseball player celebrates his scored run with teammates in the dugout

2022 MLB Betting Futures: Mets, Yankees Now Odds-On Divisional Favorites After Hot Starts

The baseball season is officially a month old today, which means it’s time to start evaluating the teams on who they are as opposed to who we thought they might be. Here’s a look at six teams, one from each division, whose betting odds have risen or fallen since Opening Day. (Divisional odds from BetMGM as of May 4.)

New York Yankees

Odds to win A.L. East: -110 now, +230 Opening Day

The Yankees looked as dreadfully dull as ever in opening the season 7-6, but they’ve won 11 straight. It was easy enough to remain skeptical when they won nine straight against the Cleveland Guardians, Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, but the Yankees have a chance tonight to complete a three-game road sweep of the AL East favorites, the Toronto Blue Jays (+135 now, +180 Opening Day). Of course, let’s remember the Yankees won 14 straight last August and then got wiped out by the Boston Red Sox in the wild card game.

Minnesota Twins

Odds to win A.L. Central: +120 now, +500 Opening Day

The Chicago White Sox (+120 now, -200 Opening Day) have gotten off to a miserable start, but the Twins are a legitimate first place team. Byron Buxton is going to be an MVP candidate as long as he stays healthy and a revamped pitching staff — featuring rookie starter Joe Ryan, rookie flame-throwing reliever Jhoan Duran and late spring additions Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan — ranks second in the AL in ERA at 3.01.

Los Angeles Angels

Odds to win A.L. West: +210 now, +400 Opening Day

Maybe it’s a coincidence the Angels have gone 12-6 and moved into first place since Joe Maddon ordered Corey Seager intentionally walked with the bases loaded — in the fourth inning! — on Apr. 15, but with the Houston Astros (-125 now, -167 Opening Day) looking like they might be in a transition year, we’ll take the Angels’ surge as a sign this might finally be the year the world gets to see Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani in a pennant race.

New York Mets

Odds to win the National League East: -155 now, +140 Opening Day

Buck Showalter leading the charge out of the dugout after Pete Alonso gets hit by a pitch. Max Scherzer going 4-0 and getting run from a game he’s not even pitching. Five guys combining to throw a no-hitter. Seven straight series wins, with a chance to make it eight today and go eight games up on the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves (+275 now, +150 Opening Day). The Mets are as real as it gets, folks.

Cincinnati Reds

Odds to win the N.L. Central: +20000 now, +1300 Opening Day

The team whose shamed broadcaster brought us the Nick Castellanos meme now offers up a lesson in instant karma from the owner’s son, who decided it was a good idea to taunt a fanbase bruised by the Reds’ cost-cutting ways. Now the Reds are 3-20, which is tied for the second-worst 23-game start in history behind only the infamous 1988 Baltimore Orioles. The Reds have no chance, of course, to win the NL Central, but starting this terribly doesn’t mean they’re going to lose 100 games. The 1992 Royals (72-90), 1969 Cleveland Indians (62-99) and 1969 Houston Astros (81-81) all avoided 100 losses after starting 4-29.

San Francisco Giants

Odds to win the National League West: +425 now, +550 Opening Day

The Los Angeles Dodgers (-250 now, -225 Opening Day) still look like the class of the division, if not the entire National League. But the Giants have the fourth-best run differential in the majors (plus-32) and certainly look like a team ready to enjoy some sustained success.
