BGC to take over Senet Group’s responsibilities from 8 April

The BGC is set to take over the Senet Group’s duties and responsibilities this week.

The Senet Group, a responsible gambling body formed by several high street bookmakers, announced it will be handing over all assets and responsibilities to the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) on 8 April.

Once the BGC takes over the Senet Group’s responsibilities, it will effectively become the main force behind industry efforts to raise standards and improve player protections across all verticals.

The BGC and Senet Group

Senet Group was first established by Ladbrokes, Gala Coral, Paddy Power and William Hill in September 2014 with the intention of developing a self-regulatory framework for leading operators and suppliers.

The Group manages the Multi Operator Self Exclusion Scheme (MOSES) retail self-exclusion scheme and created the “When the Fun Stops, Stop” responsible gambling message. Since Senet Group was formed its memberships has expanded beyond the initial four operators and was the driving force behind the safer gambling commitments announced by the BGC in November 2019.

The safer gambling commitments consisted of five core commitments: to prevent underage gambling and keep young people safe, promote a culture of safe gambling, protect and empower customers, strengthen and expand codes of practice for advertising and to increase support for gambling-related harm treatments.

Once the BGC takes over Senet’s assets and responsibilities, MOSES will become an independent entity, similar to Gamstop.

Comments from BGC and Senet

Gillian Wilmot, Senet Chairman, said: “The collaborative ethos at the heart of the new Betting and Gaming Council now offers the opportunity to combine resources to deliver safer gambling initiatives at scale.

“It is vital that the industry is at the core of solutions to protect its customers. Senet’s role in bringing the industry together and leading initiatives to protect its customers and secure its own sustainable future has added significant value.”

Brigid Simmonds, Chairman of the BGC, said: “The cross-industry collaborative approach pioneered by Senet became a blueprint which made the creation of the new Betting and Gaming Council possible.

“I would like to thank the Senet board, headed by Gillian Wilmot, and the team led by Sarah Hanratty for their hard work, dedication and the legacy they leave through the Safer Gambling Commitments, which provide a roadmap for raising standards across our industry. We look forward to building on that work.”
