Delaware’s sportsbooks continue to struggle in August

August proved to be another difficult month for sportsbooks in the state of Delaware.

According to figures from the Delaware Lottery, sportsbooks in the state took $4.4m in sports bets in August.

While August’s figures are an increase on the $3.9m wagered in July, the latest figures represent a significant decrease on the $7.7m wagered in August 2018.

The state’s three sportsbooks managed to generate $505,006 in revenue, down from the $507,410 generated in July.

Looking closer at the figures

Delaware Park was once again the highest performing sportsbook in the state. According to the Delaware Lottery’s figures, the sportsbook at Delaware Park took $2.8m in sports bets and held onto $324,177 in revenue.

Harrington Raceway took $758,077 in wagers and generated $93,518 in revenue.

A total of $813,912 was wagered at Dover Downs which translated into $87,311 in sports betting revenue.

According to the state lottery’s figures, 131,276 sports bets were placed in the month of August.

Sports betting in Delaware

Delaware was one of the first states to legalize and launch sports betting in June 2018.

When compared to other states, it could be argued that Delaware’s sports betting industry has been struggling. However, it’s important to remember that sports betting in Delaware is currently restricted to three land-based venues – Delaware Park, Harrington Raceway and Dover Downs.

On top of this, Delaware is one of the smallest states in the US. Delaware also borders New Jersey and Pennsylvania, two states that currently offer online and mobile sports wagering. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see sports fans in Delaware travel across state lines to take advantage of sign-up offers and mobile wagering in those states.

With football season in full-swing, Delaware’s sportsbooks are likely to see an increase in betting activity in the coming months.

For the year to date, bettors have wagered a total of $51.5m in Delaware, with customers winning $47.3m back.
