Breaking down the figures

The MGC places Mississippi’s casino sportsbooks into three different categories based on their location – coastal, central and northern.

Breaking down the figures, Coastal sportsbooks continued to dominate the Mississippi sports betting market. Bettors in the state wagered just under $13m in the coastal region. Sportsbooks in the area managed to generate $1.8m in revenue, more than half of the state’s total betting revenue in August.

Mississippi’s northern sportsbooks were the second-highest performing venues, taking $4.4m in sports wagers and holding on to $617,582.

Sportsbooks in the central region processed more than $2.3m in sports bets and posted a combined revenue of $435,785.

Baseball is the most popular sports to bet on

Baseball was once again one of the most popular sports to bet on as bettors wagered $9.3m on baseball events. However, Mississippi’s sportsbooks managed to generate just $309,915 from baseball betting.

With football season in full swing, it should come as no surprise that football betting played a role in boosting August’s figures. Bettors across the state wagered just over $6m on football events making it the second most popular sport to bet on in Mississippi. Sportsbooks managed to generate $1.8m in revenue from football bets.

Parlay cards were also very popular in August with punters throughout the state wagering $3.5m on parlays. In terms of revenue, parlay wagers contributed $640,200 to the state’s total revenue.

Bettors in Mississippi wagered $383,893 on basketball events making it the least popular sport to bet on in Mississippi. Basketball betting made up $25,268 of the state’s total betting revenue last month.
