Figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) show that punters in Nevada wagered about $497m on sports in January.
Out of the total bet on sports, sportsbooks in the state held on to $14.6m, a hold of less than 3%.
The latest figures indicate a slight decrease compared to January 2018. This time last year, sportsbooks took over $418m in sports bets and held on to $25m.
Basketball was the most popular sports to bet on with bettors placing over $256m in basketball bets. However, Nevada sportsbooks only held on to $5.8m of those basketball bets.
Basketball appears to have been the most popular sports among bettors this month as January is one of the few months without a full schedule of NFL and college football games.
In terms of football betting, punters in Nevada wagered $188m at sportsbooks in the state. in terms of revenue, sportsbooks reported a combined revenue of $7.7m from football bets.
These figures do not account for the Super Bowl which took place at the start of February. The 2019 Super Bowl bought in over $145m in sports bets with Nevada sportsbooks holding onto $10.7m. These figures will be included in Nevada’s February figures.
Parlay betting was fairly popular amongst Nevada’s bettors. Punters bet over $2.7m on parlays and managed to beat the casinos with sportsbooks reporting a loss of $15,000 on parlays in January.
Looking closer at the figures, just under $49m was bet on “other” sports, which includes golf, tennis, hockey and auto racing. out of this, sportsbooks held $2.1m.
In 2018, sports betting in Nevada had its best year to date generating a $301m in revenue for the year.
