Online casino gambling goes live in WV with DraftKings launch

West Virginia has just become the fourth US state to launch legal online casino gambling.

The daily fantasy provider turned multi-vertical gambling operator, DraftKings, has launched its online casino product in the state of West Virginia.

With the launch of the DraftKings casino product, West Virginia will now join Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania in offering online casino gambling.

DraftKings is the first operator to launch an online casino gambling offering in the Mountain State and have released its mobile app for both iOS and Android devices.

The DraftKings Casino product is embedded into the operator’s sports betting app and is available via a standalone mobile casino app in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The operator uses a single online casino product to serve the three states where it offers online casino gambling.

At the time of writing, in West Virginia, the DraftKings Casino consists of several table games, including some original ones created by the operator. Customers stake between $1 and $5,000 on these games.

The West Virginia offering has yet to include slot games as these usually take longer to receive regulator approval. Although the app features a live-dealer section, these games are not yet available in the state.

With the legalisation of sports betting and now the launch of online casino gambling, West Virginia has proven itself to be one of the more progressive US jurisdictions when it comes to gambling expansion.

In March 2019, the state legislature approved the WV Lottery Interactive Wagering Act legalising online casino and online poker sites.

Since the passage of the legislation, the state has progressed on schedule to draft emergency regulations to get the market up and running and has now successfully launched online casino gambling.

Under the regulatory framework, each of the state’s land-based casinos acts as a primary licensee for online casino gambling. Like the state’s sports betting laws, this means that each land-based casino can only offer one online casino brand.

As DraftKings is partnered with Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino, Penn will not be able to use its newly acquired Barstool brand for online gambling in the state.
