Sports media company theScore announces plan to launch a mobile sportsbook in New Jersey

Sports media company theScore, Inc. announced today that it plans to launch a mobile sports betting app in New Jersey next year.

This will make theScore the first media company in the US to get involved on the operator side of the US sports betting market.

John Levy, Founder and CEO of theScore, said: “This is a significant moment for theScore, becoming the first media company in North America to announce its plans to launch online and mobile sports betting in the United States.

“Sports betting has long been part of our company DNA in how we’ve delivered content to fans. Providing the ability to actually bet on games is the natural next phase for theScore.”

The company will be able to offer a sports betting app thanks to an official licensing partnership with the operator of Monmouth Park, Darby Development and the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NJTHA).

Initially, the partnership with Monmouth Park covers a five-year period. TheScore will have the option to extend this by two consecutive five-year terms if they wish.

TheScore has also partnered with Bet.Works, a startup company which will provide the sports betting platform.

Dennis Drazin, CEO and Chairman of Darby Development said: “theScore has one of the leading sports apps in North America, a world-class reputation for mobile sports development, and a large and highly-engaged audience.

“Combined with Bet.Works’ best-in-class technology and their team of experienced sports book operators that will power theScore’s digital sports betting platform, we’re thrilled to welcome them to our exclusive family of partners offering sports wagering in New Jersey.”

David Wang, Founder and CEO of Bet.Works, said: “We are extremely excited about working with theScore. They have a huge audience and one of the most comprehensive sports apps on the market, providing the connective tissue between hardcore sports fans and the teams they love.”

The sports betting app still needs to be approved by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. TheScore expects to launch the app in mid-2019.
