West Virginia’s sports betting revenue continued to rise in October.
According to figures from the West Virginia Lottery, sportsbooks in the state processed $29m in sports wagers across land-based and mobile sportsbooks in October.
Sportsbooks in the Mountain state managed to generate a total of $4.6m in revenue in October.
October’s figures represent an increase on the $25.6m bettors wagered and the $3.8m in revenue posted in September.
Mobile vs land-based
Land-based sportsbooks were the most popular way to bet in October with bettors wagering $16.3m and the sportsbooks holding onto $2.7m in revenue.
However, sports fans wagered $12.7m via mobile betting apps leaving the bookies with $1.8m in revenue. The figures show that mobile sports betting is catching up to the Mountain State’s land-based sportsbooks.
A closer look at the figures
Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races continued to lead the market in October after processing $19.1m in bets and holding onto $3.5m.
The FanDuel Sportsbook at the Greenbrier private resort generated $552,011 in revenue off of $5.8m in wagers in October. Mobile betting accounted for $519,380 of the Greenbrier’s revenue while land-based operations accounted for just $32,631.
The William Hill sportsbook at the Mountaineer Casino trailed behind after generating $535,361 in revenue from land-based operations. William Hill has yet to launch its online betting platform in the Mountain State.
Sports betting operations at Mardi Gras Casino and Wheeling Island remain inactive following the legal dispute between Delaware North and Miomni. However, both venues made small losses due to bets that were placed before betting operations were put on hold.
Mardi Gras made a loss of $499 and while Wheeling Island made a loss of $2,730 after paying out winning bets to customers.
Sports betting in West Virginia
West Virginia was one the first states to move forward with sports betting following the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018.
At the moment, three land-based sportsbooks currently serve the state along with two online and mobile sportsbooks.
Mobile sports betting returned to West Virginia in August, with the launch of FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook.
September marked the first full month of online sports betting in West Virginia since BetLucky.com shut down as a result of the Delaware North and Miomni legal dispute earlier this year.
West Virginia’s sports betting market is likely to see an increase in activity as more online sportsbooks enter the state.
