West Virginia sportsbooks took $9.5m in wagers in June

West Virginia sportsbooks saw a slight decrease in sports betting revenue and handle in June.

According to figures released by the West Virginia Lottery, sportsbooks in the Mountain State took just under $9.5m in bets in June, down from $10.7m in May.

Bookies in the state managed to generate a combined revenue of $377,552 down from $937,065 the month prior.

Breaking down the figures

Looking closer at the figures, the sportsbook at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races was the most popular bookie amongst bettors. The venue took about $5.4m in wagers and held onto $201,618.

The sportsbook at the Mountaineer Casino took $1.87m in bets and generated $154,952 in revenue making it the second most popular bookie with bettors in the state.

The Greenbrier came in at third place after taking $132,162 in wagers and holding onto $21,811.

Sports betting operations at the Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras venues are still suspended due to the dispute between Delaware North and Miomni Gaming.

As a result of the dispute, the Mountain State’s only mobile betting option, BetLucky.com, was also suspended and is still inactive. At the time of writing, there are no legal online or mobile sports betting options available in West Virginia.

When is mobile betting coming to WV?

Without mobile betting, the West Virginia sports betting market has struggled, and punters have been left without a convenient and legal mobile betting option.

With that being said, the state’s regulator has awarded mobile licenses to DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook and William Hill Sportsbook.

There is no set date for the return of mobile betting. But, DraftKings looks like it will be the first mobile sportsbook to launch in the state after the company completed testing its app in May.

It is unclear when mobile sports betting will be coming back to the Mountain State as the Department of Justice’s opinion on the Wire Act has set things back.

It appears that the West Virginia Lottery and the sportsbook operators are taking a cautious approach to reintroducing mobile betting in West Virginia.
