Senegal at the World Cup 2026 | Squad, Fixtures & Odds

Last updated: · By Anthony Colwell

Senegal are at their fourth World Cup and arrive with a familiar opponent on opening night — France, the same side they shocked 1-0 in their 2002 tournament debut. Pape Thiaw's CAF qualifying campaign was unbeaten, captain Sadio Mané leads the line, and Group I against France, Norway and Iraq pits one of Africa's most-talented squads against two of Europe's dark horses.

World Cup 2026 group and fixtures

Senegal are in Group I at World Cup 2026 alongside France, Norway and Iraq. The MetLife Stadium opener against France on 16 June is a repeat of the 2002 World Cup opening fixture — the day Papa Bouba Diop’s scuffed finish ended the reigning champions’ tournament. Norway in the same stadium six days later and Iraq in Toronto on the final matchday shape the qualification path.

Senegal World Cup 2026 squad

The squad below reflects Pape Thiaw’s selection for the March 2026 friendlies against Brazil and Peru. Sadio Mané, Pape Matar Sarr, Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye lead the headline names; Edouard Mendy returns in goal; Koulibaly’s organising centre-back partnership with Abdou Diallo holds the back four together. Final 26-man tournament squad to be confirmed in late May 2026.

How Senegal will play

Pape Thiaw uses the energetic 4-3-3 he inherited from Aliou Cissé but with a higher pressing trigger and more direct vertical play through Mané and Iliman Ndiaye on the flanks. Pape Matar Sarr provides the box-to-box engine; Idrissa Gueye screens the back four; Nicolas Jackson leads the line. Against France expect a deeper mid-block and counter-attacks through Mané — the same blueprint that worked in 2002.

The defining strength is front-three forward depth and Premier League / top-five-league experience. Mané, Jackson, Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr and Boulaye Dia all play at top-five-league clubs; behind them, Pape Matar Sarr’s progressive carries from Tottenham give Senegal a midfield engine no other African nation can match. Senegal scored 22 goals in qualifying — the most in any CAF group of six teams.

The weakness is manager-related disruption and a 26-match unbeaten run that ended in March’s 2-0 friendly defeat to Brazil at the Emirates. Pape Thiaw’s CAF ban from the AFCON walk-off is a distraction even if it doesn’t apply to the World Cup; Senegal’s goalkeeping behind 34-year-old Edouard Mendy is also thin if he picks up a tournament knock against France’s front three.

Predicted XI (4-3-3)

Senegal predicted XI for World Cup 2026 in a 4-3-3 formation

Predicted starting XI — 4-3-3. Captain: Sadio Mané.

Manager: Pape Thiaw

Thiaw took the senior job on 13 December 2024 after Aliou Cissé’s contract was not renewed following AFCON 2023 disappointment. The 44-year-old former Senegal striker had served as Cissé’s assistant from 2015 to 2024 and qualified Senegal for the 2026 World Cup with three matches to spare. He was banned for five CAF matches after the AFCON 2025 final walk-off, but the suspension does not apply to FIFA matches and he remains eligible for the World Cup. Senegal’s federation has publicly stood behind him through the disciplinary process.

Captain: Sadio Mané

Mané captains Senegal from the left wing and is the country’s all-time top scorer with 40-plus international goals. The 34-year-old fired Senegal to a maiden AFCON title in 2022 and has since moved from Bayern Munich to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Still the system’s emotional leader and primary attacking outlet — his cutting inside off the left to find the far corner remains the move opponents must shut down first.

Senegal players to watch at World Cup 2026

Sadio Mané — Left winger / captain, Al-Nassr

Senegal’s captain, all-time top scorer (40+ goals) and the man who fired them to a maiden AFCON title in 2022. Now 34 and based in Saudi Arabia, but the system’s emotional leader and primary attacking outlet — his cutting inside off the left to find the far corner remains the move opponents must shut down first.

Pape Matar Sarr — Central midfielder, Tottenham Hotspur

Topped Senegal’s qualifying scoring chart with five goals from midfield. Tottenham’s progressive ball-carrier, comfortable in the half-spaces and the box-to-box engine that turns Mané’s combinations into goals. The Premier League name to watch in Golden Boot specials at a longer price than the front three.

Nicolas Jackson — Striker, Bayern Munich (loan)

On loan at Bayern Munich from Chelsea after a productive 2025 in west London. Six-foot-three, two-footed and Senegal’s first-choice No 9 since 2024. The rare Senegalese striker who can lead the line and run the channels — a natural fit for Thiaw’s vertical 4-3-3.

Kalidou Koulibaly — Centre-back, Al-Hilal

The defensive leader of the side at 34. Now in Saudi Arabia after his Chelsea and Napoli years, Koulibaly remains the senior partner in central defence and the player whose organising holds Pape Thiaw’s high-line system together.

Iliman Ndiaye — Forward / right winger, Everton

Everton’s chief creator and a versatile front-three option for Senegal. Comfortable wide right or off the centre-forward, Ndiaye’s left foot and one-on-one dribbling give Senegal a plan B when Mané or Ismaila Sarr are tracked.

How Senegal qualified for World Cup 2026

Senegal won CAF Group B unbeaten — 10 matches played, 7 wins, 3 draws and zero defeats, with 22 goals scored and just three conceded. Top spot was sealed on 9 October 2025 with a 4-0 home demolition of Mauritania in Dakar, Mané scoring twice and Pape Matar Sarr getting on the scoresheet. The result clinched qualification with three matches still to play.

The standout result was the 4-0 home win over Mauritania. The setback — by Senegal’s standards — was three group draws, including 1-1 stalemates against eventual second-placed DR Congo and Sudan, which delayed the qualification celebration to matchday seven. Pape Matar Sarr led the qualifying scoring chart with five goals; Mané added four including the brace that confirmed top spot.

Senegal’s World Cup history

Senegal are at their fourth World Cup and the most-decorated of Africa’s modern World Cup nations alongside Morocco. Their 2002 debut campaign in South Korea / Japan produced one of the great World Cup upsets — a 1-0 win over reigning champions France in the opening match — and a quarter-final run that remains the country’s best finish. They went out at the round of 16 in 2022 against England.

The 2002 opener anchors the country’s footballing folklore. Papa Bouba Diop’s 30th-minute scuffed finish past Fabien Barthez, El Hadji Diouf running the French defence ragged, and an unfancied Senegal — at their tournament debut — taking down the world champions in Seoul. Senegal then went on to beat Sweden in the round of 16 before losing to Turkey via a golden goal in the quarter-final.

2018 Russia Group stage
2022 Qatar Round of 16
2026 USA / Canada / Mexico TBD

Senegal’s recent form

Last five senior internationals (most recent first):

  • 28 Mar 2026 — Peru — 1-0 W — Friendly (Madrid)
  • 21 Mar 2026 — Brazil — 0-2 L — Friendly (Emirates Stadium, London) — ended 26-match unbeaten run
  • 18 Jan 2026 — Morocco — 1-0 W — AFCON 2025 final (later forfeited 0-3 after Senegal walk-off; Senegal appealing to CAS)
  • 14 Jan 2026 — Egypt — 2-1 W — AFCON 2025 semi-final
  • 10 Jan 2026 — Cape Verde — 2-0 W — AFCON 2025 quarter-final

The Brazil defeat at the Emirates was Senegal’s first loss in 26 matches. The Peru friendly five days later restored confidence ahead of the squad announcement. The AFCON 2025 final result remains contested at the Court of Arbitration for Sport — Senegal won 1-0 on the pitch but were stripped of the title after their stoppage-time walk-off.

Senegal World Cup 2026 odds

Senegal are 80/1 with bet365 to win the tournament — best-priced African nation alongside Morocco. The 8/1 to top Group I is the most realistic outright group market given France’s heavy favouritism; the 8/13 to qualify from Group I prices Senegal as one of the two safe progressors. Quarter-final and beyond pricing reflects Senegal’s 2002 ceiling — the World Cup winner odds hub has the priced field in full.

Market Best price Bookmaker

To qualify from Group I 8/13 bet365
To reach the quarter-final 9/2 bet365
To reach the semi-final 14/1 bet365
