Getting to Grips with Roulette Odds

There are a huge number of possible bets that you could place each time you spin the wheel. These can be split into two types: inside and outside bets. An outside bet refers to the betting options that sit outside the numbered grid on a roulette table. Even money bets such as red and black, dozens and columns are all examples of outside bets. These bets involve lower risk, as they cover more of the roulette table. As you’d expect, this means a winning outside wager lands more modest payouts than an inside bet.

If you’re more of a risk-taker, the inside bets can land you some huge payouts. Inside bets involve lower table coverage and include single-number bets – the bet with the highest payout in the game. It’s also known as the ‘straight up and pays out at 35:1.

When you’re playing with real money, it usually pays to have a plan. We all have certain guidelines we stick to when playing blackjack, right? Well, roulette is a little different. Where some casino games require a bit of skill and knowledge, roulette is purely a game of chance. All it takes to win is a little luck. 

There’s nothing you can do to tilt the odds in your favour in roulette, so common strategies instead focus on managing your bankroll and varying your stakes. Whether they really help or not, having a system for placing your bets can add a bit of extra excitement to the game. Here are some of the most popular strategies players use at roulette sites — note, these apply to even-money outside bets, such as red/black and odd/even. 

Martingale

The Martingale system is the best-known roulette strategy but also one of the riskiest. It essentially involves doubling the size of your bet if you lose. Start off by placing an even money outside bet on red/black or odd/even — these bets pay out 1:1 if you win, so a £1 stake will return £2. 

Keep betting the same amount if you win, or double your stake if you lose. So if you start with a £1 stake and lose the first spin, increase your bet to £2. The theory is that you’ll recover the money you previously lost the next time you win. However, the main problem with the Martingale is that you can quickly run out of money, particularly if you’re playing with a small budget — it takes just a few losses in a row to lose a lot of cash when you’re doubling your stakes. Additionally, you may hit the maximum stake limit on the table.

Grand Martingale

The Grand Martingale is an even riskier variant of the original strategy. Instead of doubling your stake when you lose, you double your stake and add one unit. A ‘unit’ refers to your original stake. Let’s say you start with a £1 bet. You lose the first spin and double your stake (£2) and add one unit (£1) to make a £3 bet. You then lose again, double the previous bet (£6) and add one unit (£1) to make a £7 bet. You’ve now spent £10, but if your £7 bet wins, it’ll return £14, leaving you with £4 profit.

Like the original Martingale then, it’s possible to recoup your losses and turn a profit when you eventually win. However, as you’re increasing your bet by more each time you lose, you’re even more at risk of blowing your budget in a few turns.

Reverse Martingale

The third and final Martingale strategy we’re going to look at is the reverse system. Also known as Paroli, here you’ll be doubling your stake if you win and keeping it the same if you lose — the opposite of the original Martingale system. 

Let’s say you once again start with a £1 bet and this time you win on the first spin, correctly choosing black. You’d then double your bet to £2. Win again, and the stake goes up to £4. If this time you lose, you return to your original stake of £1 for the next spin. It’s a safer option as you’re only increasing the size of your bets when you’ve just landed a win. 

But like with any roulette system, you’re still playing against the house edge. You have slightly less than 50% chance of winning these even money bets, putting you at a disadvantage in the long run.

Fibonacci

Another method that’s a little less risky than the Martingale and Grand Martingale is the Fibonacci Sequence. Named after the Italian mathematician, the Fibonacci sequence lists a series of numbers where each one is the sum of the two previous numbers.

Here’s what it looks like in practice.

1 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 5 – 8 – 13 – 21 – 34 – 55 – 89 – 144 – 233 – 377 – 610 – 987…

The sequence has applications in maths and science, but also proves handy in roulette betting. Once again, this system is just for even-money bets. You don’t have to start at £1 for your stake — you can treat the sequence as a multiplier. All that matters is you follow the sequence: each number (or bet) is the sum of the previous two in the chain.

If you win on the first spin, simply bet the same stake again. If you lose, move onto the next number in the sequence. If you win further down the line, move back two numbers in the sequence and use that number as your next stake. Like any roulette strategy, it’s best to quit while you’re ahead with the Fibonacci system, or the house edge will quickly catch up with you. 

D’Alembert

Finally, we have the D’Alembert strategy, named after the 18th century French mathematician. Here you’ll need to decide on a base unit stake — we’ll go with £1 again. As you bet, your stake essentially moves up and down in steps. If you lose, you increase your stake by one unit. If you win, decrease it by one unit.

Here’s an example: you start with £1 and win the first bet, staying on £1. The second bet is a loss, so you increase the bet to £2. Lose again, and the stake goes up to £3. Win the next one and it drops back down to £2.

Once again, this is a less risky strategy than some of the other methods, but isn’t immune to losing streaks either. Still, if you’d like to try and keep your bankroll ticking over for a decent session, the D’Alembert roulette strategy could be a good option.

In American Roulette, despite the odds being longer due to the double zero, the payouts are the same, meaning the house edge is higher (5.26%) than the European version (2.7%).

It’s not all doom and gloom though, with the double zero space comes an additional inside bet called Top Line. With this bet, you can cover 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 all at once.

French Roulette

French roulette takes us back to the single zero-style wheel, with a couple of twists in the gameplay. The La Partage rule means that if the ball lands on the zero space, any even money wagers that players have made — such as red/black and odd/even — are split in two, with half being refunded to the player. Conversely, in European and American Roulette, players would lose their whole stake.

Another interesting feature of French Roulette is the En Prison rule. It’s more commonly found at land-based casinos in Monaco than it is online, but essentially whenever the ball lands on zero, even money bets on the next turn only return your stake, rather than doubling your money.

Mini Roulette

Mini Roulette is a fun variation of the game featuring just 13 numbers — 1–12 alternating red and black and the zero. Although having fewer numbers increases the house edge, the La Partage rule sometimes features, reducing the amount players can potentially lose.

In roulette, bets on even money bets such as red/black and odd/even have 1:1 payouts.
