If you’re a newcomer to the world of craps, the complex table layout might make things seem a bit confusing, but in reality, you’re simply betting on the outcome of a dice roll. It’s the huge amount of betting options that often throws newcomers off. Our quick beginner’s guide to playing craps online will teach you everything you need to know – you’ll be playing like a pro in no time!

So we know that the aim of the game is to bet on the outcome of the dice roll. Where many ‘how to play craps’ guides fall short is that they don’t explain the difference between playing land-based and online craps. Unlike games such as roulette, things aren’t exactly the same between both versions. Let’s take a look at how things kick off.

The Come Out Roll

Every new game of craps begins with what’s known as the come out roll. When playing online, you are technically classed as the ‘shooter’, so you have to place a wager before this roll takes place. You can either bet on ‘pass’ or ‘don’t pass’. Naturally, when playing offline, you’d want to bet on yourself shooting the right number. However, since you’re playing online craps, you can bet on either outcome as the computer does the rolling.

  • Pass wins if the roll is a 7 or 11
  • Don’t pass wins if the roll is 2 or 3 (some games include 12, but often this is referred to as a ‘push’, which sees all wagers are returned)
  • Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) becomes the ‘point’. Your original wager remains on the table.

The Next Roll

The come out roll is pretty easy to get your head around, but it’s the next roll which often throws new players off. If your first bet was on ‘pass’ and the roll was a 4, this becomes your point number and your bet is still in play. You now need another 4 to be rolled before a 7. Essentially, your wager has flipped sides. Where you wanted to land a 7 on the come out roll, you now want to avoid it on the next roll. If you bet on ‘don’t pass’, the opposite of the rules above will apply.

More Craps Betting Options

Once you’ve passed the come out roll, a whole new world of betting options becomes available to you. The vast majority of these bets are “house bets”, where the advantage leans heavily in favour of the casino. However, there are a few exceptions, including:

Come & Don’t Come: Similar to the pass and don’t pass bets, but instead, these bets are placed after the point is established, rather than before. They also pay out at even money.

Place Win: Place win bets are made after a point has been established, following the come out roll. You can bet on any of the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. You will win if your chosen number is rolled before a 7. Your payout varies depending on which number you have chosen.

Place Lose: As the name suggests, this bet is the opposite of the place win bet. They can be placed on the same selection of numbers, but in this instance, you win if a 7 is rolled before your chosen number. Again, your payout varies depending on which number you have chosen

Finding the Best Site

How to Find the Best Online Casino for Playing Craps

There’s no shortage of online craps casinos available right now, so how do you choose between them? Our experts have done the hard work for you, putting together a list of the top online casinos where you can play craps for real money. Here are some important questions we always ask when weighing up the merits of different sites.

Is it Licensed?

To ensure the games are fair and your details are kept secure by industry-standard encryption and provide fair payouts, you’ll want to stick to sites that are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission.

Is there a Good Welcome Bonus?

The best online craps casino sites will offer a generous sign up incentive, such as a deposit bonus, for new players. Whatever your particular craps strategy, casino bonuses will give you a leg up at the start.

Does it have a Big Games Library?

When you feel like stepping away from the craps table, it’s good to know a site has plenty of other games on offer, from slots to table games, not to mention live casino options.

Is it Mobile Friendly?

If playing craps and other casino games on mobile devices is important to you, you’ll want to know if the site has a user-friendly mobile site. Extra brownie points should go to sites with their own native apps you can download.

Does it Support your Preferred Banking Method?

The top online casinos will support a range of banking methods so customers can pay and withdraw funds without any extra fuss.

Is there Good Customer Support?

The best craps sites, and casino sites in general, will make it easy to contact customer support by email, phone or live chat if you have any issues.

Bonuses

Claim a Bonus from a Top Craps Casino

Welcome bonuses can give you bankroll a healthy boost when you sign up to a casino site, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Let’s take a look at some of the incentives around right now.

Matched Deposit Bonuses

With a matched deposit bonus, the site will match your 1st deposit up to a certain stated sum. For example, a matched deposit of 100% up to £200 means that signing up and depositing £200 will give you an extra £200 to bet with. Just be sure to check the min deposit required to access the bonus.

No Deposit Bonuses

With a no deposit bonus, you don’t have to put down any of your own money to unlock the offer — all you have to do is sign up. While it won’t be a lot of money, it’s the closest you’ll come to play free craps for real money online.

No Wagering Bonuses

Almost all welcome bonuses come with wagering requirements attached, meaning you’ll have to bet your bonus amount a certain number of times before you can cash out any winnings from that bonus. With no wagering bonuses, there’s no such restriction in place. You can withdraw winnings from real money craps straight away.

Free Spins

If you enjoy slots as much as craps, you’ll want to look out for free spins bonuses. As the name suggests, these let you try out selected slots titles for free, with the potential to win real money prizes.

Wagering Requirements

Welcome bonuses are particularly useful for craps newcomers as they let you try out bets and get familiar with the gameplay without risking your own funds. But it’s important to check those wagering requirements, which can vary widely from site to site. For example, a hefty bonus with an equally hefty 50x wagering attached may not be as beneficial as a smaller bonus which has a more manageable 25x rollover value. As such, it’s a great idea to read the terms and conditions before you sign up to a bonus.

Alternative Games

Other Casino Games

Fancy taking a break from this iconic dice game? You can always have a flutter on these other popular online classics you’ll find at the best craps sites.

Poker

The basic premise of poker is quite simple: players bet on who’s holding the strongest range of cards. But there’s a whole world of tactics in play here, and there’s also a wide range of variations to choose from. These include the hugely popular Texas Hold’em, its close sibling Omaha, and old favourite Seven Card-Stud. Both live dealer and virtual versions are on offer, so you’ll be sure to play in a way that suits you.

Blackjack

Blackjack pits you against the dealer, drawing cards to see who’ll get closest to the magic number of 21. The mixture of skill, daring and good luck needed to win, not to mention the low house edge, makes it one of the all-time favourite casino games. You can choose to play against either the computer or a live dealer, and engrossing variations include fast-paced Speed Blackjack and the more relaxed Blackjack Party.

Roulette

Roulette is as straightforward as casino games can get: put bets on numbers and colours, then see where the ball lands on the roulette wheel. Its simplicity makes it easy to play whether you’re at home or on the move, and there are more variations than you can shake a rake at. From European Roulette to American Roulette to French Roulette, not to mention live games like Lightning Roulette. As such. there really is a lot to discover.

Slots

From old school games with familiar fruit symbols, right through to the latest Megaways titles with their shape-shifting reels, there’s a universe of online slots available at the best casino sites. Developed by software providers such as Microgaming and NetEnt, many games progressive jackpots, giving you the potential to make big-money wins if the paylines come up.

Live Dealer

Play at a Live a Dealer Craps Site

While live dealer casino games have been around for a while, many didn’t think it was possible to bring craps to life in this way. But software developer Evolution has stepped up to the challenge, creating an immersive live dealer craps game that’s streamed from a sultry, speakeasy-style studio. Each roll of the dice is made by a mechanical arm, using Random Number Generators (RNG) to ensure fairness with every throw, and the game’s availability at major sites like Betway and 10Bet means that it’s readily available to fans of craps.
Of course, the lack of cheering, back-slapping and high-fiving casino crowds does mean it doesn’t quite capture the genuine craps experience. But it’s still a fun alternative to the virtual craps games which rely on random number generators rather than those famed red dice.

There aren’t too many other live dealer craps games available for players to try out. But if you’re looking for the most authentic live craps experience around, we would recommend signing up to a site that offers the Evolution Gaming title. The software developer has long been the industry leader for live casino games so you know you’re in for a quality experience when you play at an Evolution Gaming casino.

New Casinos

Try Out a New Craps Casino

While there’s a solid range of long-established casino sites to choose from, you should also consider new casinos when you want to play craps. Some factors in their favour can include:

  • Big welcome bonuses designed to attract attention from new players
  • Innovative, playful page designs
  • Generous ongoing promotions to keep members coming back

There are some potential drawbacks to new casinos. For example, they may not offer casino apps to download, and their games libraries may not be as expansive as what you find on older online casinos. Our reviewers will closely consider the pros and cons of new casinos, and recommend the best for you.

Mobile

Play Craps from Wherever you Are

Thanks to mobile casinos, you don’t have to be shackled to a desktop to play craps and other games. Almost all online casinos are optimised for mobile, meaning you can play on Android and iOS mobile devices wherever there’s a strong internet connection.

Playing through your web browser is one way to do it, but we recommend downloading a native mobile app if it’s available. Native casino apps tend to offer a smoother, more fluid experience — you can access games quickly, without having to go via your browser. In addition to that, you can also get push notifications alerting you to the latest bonuses and promos.

Cashier

Find Your Perfect Banking Method

The top online craps sites will let you pay funds and take payouts in a range of ways. Let’s have a quick look at the most popular.

How to deposit with PayPal
Debit Cards

The upside when banking with debit cards is the lack of faff — you won’t have to create any additional e-wallet accounts or purchase prepaid cards. You can just pay into your account for instant play. What’s more, using a debit card will always make you eligible for welcome bonuses. One snag is you’ll have to input bank/card details when signing up, which some players may not be comfortable with. A debit card payout can also take longer to process compared with an e-wallet.

Paypal casino logo
E-wallets

Using an e-wallet such as PayPal for your online play gives you an additional level of security over a debit card, as you won’t have to share your bank/card details online. It can also mean quicker access to funds, with some casinos, like those on our fast withdrawal list, releasing your money within hours when you bank with an e-wallet. A significant drawback is that some welcome bonuses may not be available to players who make their first deposit through e-wallets such as Skrill or Neteller. So, always check the full terms and conditions.

Paysafecard Logo
Paysafecard

A number of online casinos allow you to use Paysafecard, which is great if you’re worried about online security, or keen to set limits on how much you’re able to stake. Paysafecard involves prepaid vouchers you can purchase with cash in physical retailers, or buy online with a payment method of your choice. You then input the PIN code at your casino in order to upload the prepaid funds. As you might imagine, this method isn’t well suited to high rollers who want to deposit a lot in one go and you won’t be able to withdraw any funds using a Paysafecard.

Responsible Gambling

Tips for Responsible Gambling

At Compare.bet, we only recommend online casinos that are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. These sites will all have the following tools that will help you stay in control of your online gambling.

Time Reminders and Deposit Limits

One of the benefits of online betting, compared to land-based casinos, is that you’ll be able to set yourself time reminders that will automatically alert you once your session has exceeded a set amount of time. You can also place restrictions on how much you’re able to deposit in a certain period.

Time Outs

If you feel like you could do with a break from gambling, you can set a time out. This means you’ll lock yourself out of your account for a fixed period, ranging from 24 hours to six weeks.

Self Exclusions

The next step up from a time out is a self exclusion. This is a handy tool if you get the sense that your gambling is becoming a problem, and will suspend access to your account for at least six months.

For help, advice or practical guidance when it comes to problem gambling, consult the resources at Gamcare.org.uk and Begambleaware.org. You can also call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133.

Time to Play!

Now you’re all clued up on the basics of how to play online craps, you’re probably ready to head straight into a game. Look out for demo versions of the game if you’d like to get familiar with certain aspects of the game, and be sure to take advantage of any no deposit bonuses you can find. Don’t forget to choose from one of our top online casinos to get the best out of your casino experience. Most importantly, remember to play within your limits and have fun!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bet in online craps?

Much like any other casino game, the best bet is, of course, the one with the lowest house edge. These are mathematically the best wagers. In craps you’ll find that your best option is the don’t pass bet, with a house edge of just 1.36%.

Can I be sure that my game of online craps is fair?

To be certain you’re not playing at a casino where the house edge on craps is dishonestly inflated, be sure to pick from our list of UK licensed gambling operators. To qualify for their licence, these sites must have their games independently audited at regular intervals to prove they pay out fairly. This means you can play with complete peace of mind.

Are there any tricks I can use to beat the house?

No. Craps is entirely a game of chance. You’re betting on the outcome of a dice roll, so it’s impossible to beat the house by using some sort of strategy. However, it is recommended that you place wagers with the lowest house edge, as these give you the best mathematical chance of winning.

How is the outcome of the dice roll determined?

In place of actual dice, virtual craps games utilise random number generators (RNGs) to determine the numbers rolled. An RNG is a piece of computer software which uses an algorithm to create truly random results each and every time. RNG games at UK-licensed casinos must be regularly vetted by independent testers to ensure fairness.

Can I play live dealer craps?

While some of the top software developers, such as NetEnt, have provided immersive, authentic live versions of games like roulette and blackjack, you won’t find a live dealer craps game offered at any of the top online casinos at the moment. Land-based craps sets itself apart from roulette and blackjack, as it is the only casino game where the player –not the dealer– interacts with the betting device. In this instance, it’s the dice that are thrown onto the craps table. Handing the task of throwing the dice over to a live dealer takes away some of the magic that makes craps such a popular game. Plus, land-based craps is largely a communal game and the camaraderie shared by players at a craps table would be incredibly hard to recreate over a live stream.
