World Cup 2026 group and fixtures

Group A is a winnable draw under the expanded 48-team format. Hosts Mexico are clear favourites and a tournament-opener test in front of 87,000 at the Estadio Azteca, but Bafana Bafana then move to Atlanta to face Czechia on neutral ground, before closing the group against South Korea in Monterrey. Top two and the eight best third-placed sides advance — a result against Czechia or South Korea would put a knockout berth firmly in play in the wider World Cup 2026 picture.

South Africa World Cup 2026 squad

Broos’s squad is heavily Mamelodi Sundowns-tilted — the two-time CAF Champions League holders contribute the spine: captain Ronwen Williams in goal, Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba at full-back, Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas in midfield, and Themba Zwane wide. The Premier League name at the front is Lyle Foster of Burnley, with Al Ahly’s Percy Tau the most-decorated international attacker in the squad. The 26-man tournament list is due in late May after a pre-tournament camp in Mexico to acclimatise to the altitude.

How South Africa will play

Broos has settled on a 4-3-3 / 4-3-2-1 hybrid built around the Mamelodi Sundowns spine: Williams in goal, Mudau and Modiba at full-back, Mokoena and Aubaas controlling midfield. The shape sits in a compact mid-block out of possession, allowing Tau and Zwane to stay narrow on the inside-forward role and Foster to lead the line as a counterattack outlet. The basic identity hasn’t changed since the 2023 AFCON fourth-place finish — defensive structure first, transitional outlets when turnovers happen.

The strength is the Sundowns chemistry. Six or seven of Bafana’s likely starters play together every week at the four-time CAF Champions League finalists, and the resulting on-field cohesion is the single biggest reason for South Africa’s defensive numbers in qualifying (eight goals conceded in 10 matches, the joint-best record across CAF Group C). Mokoena’s set-piece delivery and Williams’s shot-stopping won the country’s last AFCON quarter-final on penalties — both are tournament-grade.

The vulnerability is creating chances against a top-50 defence. Bafana scored 17 times in qualifying but only six of those came against opponents ranked above 70 in the FIFA list. The Mexico opener at the Azteca looks the priced fixture: 87,000 home fans, the altitude, and a Mexican press that’s specifically built to punish patient possession sides like Broos’s. The Czechia and Korea tests are the genuine qualification windows.

Predicted XI (4-3-3)

South Africa predicted XI for World Cup 2026 in a 4-3-3 formation

Predicted starting XI — 4-3-3. Captain: Ronwen Williams.

Manager: Hugo Broos

Belgian coach Broos took the Bafana job in May 2021 with a CV reading Anderlecht, Genk, Club Brugge and the 2017 AFCON winners’ role at Cameroon. South Africa’s fourth-place run at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast was the platform of his cycle, and direct qualification for World Cup 2026 has been its summit. Broos has confirmed this will be his final managerial appointment — he’ll retire after the tournament — which adds an emotional last-job angle to the entire campaign.

Captain: Ronwen Williams

Williams has captained Bafana since 2021 and is one of the few modern senior international skippers to wear the armband from goal. The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper saved four penalties in the AFCON 2023 quarter-final shootout against Cape Verde — a result that took South Africa to the semi-finals — and his organisation of a back four built around Sundowns teammates is the single biggest non-tactical advantage Bafana carry into Group A.

South Africa players to watch at World Cup 2026

Lyle Foster — Centre-forward, Burnley

The Premier League striker and the country’s most-prominent senior attacker. Topped the Bafana qualifying scoring chart with four goals and is the team’s primary route to set-piece chances against compact opposition. A name to watch in the Golden Boot market at three-figure prices for an outside flutter on a deep run.

Ronwen Williams — Goalkeeper / captain, Mamelodi Sundowns

The dressing-room voice and on-pitch organiser. Penalty-shootout hero of the 2023 AFCON quarter-final, four-time PSL Goalkeeper of the Year, and the rare modern senior international captain to wear the armband from between the sticks.

Teboho Mokoena — Midfielder, Mamelodi Sundowns

Bafana’s most-creative midfielder and free-kick specialist. The September 2025 ineligibility ruling cost the federation three points but Mokoena remained in the squad and was the heartbeat of the closing qualifying run. Set-piece deliveries are his money ball.

Percy Tau — Right winger, Al Ahly

The Bafana talisman of the modern era. Egyptian Premier League regular and multi-time CAF Champions League winner with Al Ahly. The dribbling and shot-from-the-half-space that carry Broos’s transitional gameplans.

Siyabonga Ngezana — Centre-back, FCSB

Romanian Liga 1 regular and the back-line organiser. Aerial dominance and recovery pace that lets Bafana’s full-backs push high — a profile that’s increasingly rare in the African game and the most-likely Bafana defender to register in the World Cup’s xT-against numbers.

How South Africa qualified for World Cup 2026

South Africa won CAF Group C with 18 points across 10 matches — clear of Nigeria — securing the country’s first World Cup qualification since 2010 (and first non-host qualification since 2002). The campaign included a 3-0 forfeit defeat to Lesotho in September 2025 after FIFA ruled Teboho Mokoena had been fielded ineligibly during the 2-0 win in March, but Bafana absorbed the points hit and clinched qualification with a game to spare.

The standout result was the 2-0 home win over Nigeria at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban (March 2025) — the result that effectively decided Group C and reset the country’s expectations after a difficult AFCON 2023 cycle. The closing 3-0 win over Rwanda in October 2025 was the clincher.

South Africa’s World Cup history

Three previous World Cup appearances and never a knockout-round qualification — Bafana’s tournament identity is built around the bittersweet memory of 2010, when South Africa became the first host nation in World Cup history to be eliminated at the group stage. The country debuted at France 98 with a 1-1 draw against Denmark, made minor improvement at Korea/Japan 2002 (out on goal difference), and produced one of the iconic individual moments of the 2010 tournament in Tshabalala’s curling opener.

Two moments still in heaviest rotation. Tshabalala’s Soccer City finish against Mexico in the 2010 opener — a curling left-foot strike into the top corner that produced the most-replayed celebration of the entire tournament. And the 2-1 win over France in Bloemfontein that sealed Bafana’s group-stage exit but contributed to France’s wider tournament collapse, going home as the only host eliminated at the first hurdle but going home winning.

Year Host Finish
1998 France Group stage
2002 South Korea/Japan Group stage
2010 South Africa Group stage (host)

South Africa’s recent form

Last five senior internationals (most recent first):

  • 14 Oct 2025 — Rwanda — 3-0 W — WC qualifier (Mbombela) — qualification clinched
  • 10 Oct 2025 — Zimbabwe — 1-0 W — WC qualifier (Moses Mabhida)
  • 9 Sep 2025 — Nigeria — 1-1 D — WC qualifier (Bloemfontein)
  • 5 Sep 2025 — Lesotho — 0-3 L — WC qualifier (forfeit awarded after Mokoena ineligibility ruling; 2-0 on the pitch)
  • 10 Jun 2025 — Benin — 2-0 W — WC qualifier (Polokwane)

The autumn 2025 closing run was the campaign’s strongest stretch — back-to-back home wins over Zimbabwe and Rwanda sealed qualification before the squad was given a long winter break. Broos has named the squad for the March 2026 European tour and confirmed an early-June pre-tournament camp in Mexico to acclimatise to the altitude.

South Africa World Cup 2026 odds

South Africa are 1000/1 with Bet365 to win the tournament outright — among the longest prices of any qualified nation in the World Cup winner odds market. Group A prices price in the difficulty: 33/1 to top a group containing the hosts and a top-25 South Korea side. The qualify-from-group market is the live one for Bafana backers under the 48-team format that advances eight third-placed teams — 5/1 to escape the first round is the priced position.

Head-to-head record

South Africa vs Mexico

Four prior senior meetings since 1998, with Mexico holding a 2-1-1 edge. The most-recent and most-significant was the 1-1 draw in the 2010 World Cup opening match at Soccer City — the Siphiwe Tshabalala curling finish that opened a tournament on home soil. The 11 June 2026 rematch at the Estadio Azteca is the first competitive Bafana fixture against El Tri on Mexican soil.

South Africa vs Czechia

The two nations have only met once before — a 2-2 friendly at the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia. The 18 June 2026 group fixture at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will be the first ever competitive fixture between the two countries.

South Africa vs South Korea

Four prior meetings between the two nations. The most-recent was a 2-1 friendly defeat for South Africa in Busan in November 2023; Korea hold the all-time edge with two wins to South Africa’s one and one draw. The 25 June 2026 group finale in Monterrey will be the first ever competitive fixture between the two.
