New Jersey blackjack sites let you play one of the all-time classic table games without having to set foot in an Atlantic City casino. Whether you’re being cozy on your couch, chilling in your back yard or just passing the time on the bus, you can take on the dealer wherever there’s an Internet connection, with the best blackjack sites offering mobile apps for on-the-go convenience.

Online gambling has been legal in the Garden State for quite some time now – the law allows sites to operate as long as they’re licensed and affiliated with bricks-and-mortar Atlantic City casinos. This means you can relax, browse our list of fully regulated and recommended New Jersey blackjack sites, and sign up for the ones that look good to you.

Blackjack rules

How to play blackjack

Online blackjack follows the same, simple rules as in-person blackjack. Your goal is to have a hand that scores higher than the dealer’s, without going over 21 (a “bust”). You’re dealt two cards at the start of the round, with jacks, queens and kings all worth 10, and number cards carrying their face value. Aces are interesting because they can count as either one or 11 – whichever is best for your hand.

  1. Deal

The croupier deals two hands, two cards for the dealer hand and two for your own. Your two cards will be dealt face up, while the dealer will have one face up and one face down.
  2. Blackjack

If your two cards add up to 21 – for example, if you’ve been dealt an ace and a king, – that’s termed a “blackjack” and you’ll automatically win the round (unless the rules of the site say that it’s a tie if the dealer also has a blackjack). If not, you can choose to hit, stand, double down or split.
  3. Betting Options

If either you or the dealer hit, another card is dealt. The play continues until both players stand, one player hits 21, or goes bust. If both players stand, the one with the hand closest to 21 wins the round.

The widespread rule being that the dealer must stand when the value of their hand is 17 or over. Whoever gets closest to 21 without busting is the winner.

Blackjack variations

Different ways to play 21

Many blackjack sites offer different versions of the classic game, which means you can enjoy exploring whole new ways to play. Some variations available to discover online include:

  • Multihand Blackjack, which as the name suggests lets you take multiple seats at the table simultaneously, meaning you can go ahead and make different plays, like splitting and doubling down, at the same time
  • Blackjack X-change, which follows most of the classic rules, but with the added ability to buy and sell individual cards
  • Blazing 7s Blackjack, a variation which includes a side bet based on how many 7s you have in your hand
Blackjack strategy

Is there a way to win?

It’s important to remember that, as with all casino games, there’s no ironclad way to ensure you come away with more winnings. However, there are some popular strategies when it comes to online blackjack. For example, the received wisdom is to split if you’re dealt a pair of aces, as a single ace gives you a better foundation for hitting 21, and splitting is a better approach than playing two aces as a single hand. It’s also a popular strategy to split a pair of eights and aim for two separate hands worth 18 each, rather than keep both eights in one hand for a combined starting value of 16, and risk a bust.

There are also some well-known “systems” for playing blackjack. One example is the Martingale, which is where you double your bet after each losing round. This means that when you do eventually win, you’ll recoup your losses. Of course, there’s always the risk of running out of funds or hitting the betting limit on that game before your losing streak ends.

Odds and payouts

Blackjack by the numbers

Payouts can vary depending on various side bets offered across New Jersey blackjack sites. But generally, if you win with a natural blackjack (in other words, if your first two cards add up to 21), the payout is 3/2. So, if you’ve bet $10, a blackjack will get you $15. On the other hand, if you beat the dealer without a blackjack, the payout is simply 1/1.

The house edge varies across different types of online blackjack, with some games as low as 0.13%, and others increasing to 0.87%, depending on the side bets and numbers of decks involved.

Mobile blackjack

Play blackjack on the go

One of the great advantages of online blackjack is you’re not limited to playing on a desktop computer. The best blackjack sites are fully optimized for smartphones and tablets, and also have mobile apps you can download for swift, seamless play.

Software

Who makes the best blackjack games?

New Jersey blackjack sites provide access to casino games online, but they don’t develop the games themselves. That task falls to software development companies, whose coders, designers and all-round gaming geniuses come up with the various variations of online blackjack you see on the sites. Some of the best-known companies include NetEnt, Gamesys and Evolution, although many players probably won’t know, or even particularly care about, which company is behind which game.

Free blackjack

Play blackjack for fun, no strings attached

It’s usually possible to play free online blackjack, as many sites will let you try out the demo versions of their games. The good thing about these free demos is newbies can get to grips with the gameplay and practice as much as they need to, without having to risk any real money. Even seasoned players may find demos a good way to decide which blackjack games they prefer, in terms of graphics, user experience and new variations on the classic rules.

Live dealer blackjack

Play with a real croupier

The best blackjack sites take things up a notch with live games. These provide a true casino-like experience by letting you play against real-life dealers who lay the cards out on a real blackjack table. All of the action is streamed via webcam, and you’ll even be able to interact with the dealers through a chat window. It’s the closest you’ll come to playing blackjack in person without actually being there, and you won’t even have to change out of your house clothes to do it.

FAQs

Do live dealer games use random number generators?

Live dealer blackjack games work exactly like blackjack games in bricks-and-mortar casinos, with real human beings dealing out real cards. No random number generators are required.

Do I have to live in New Jersey to play online blackjack?

No, you don’t have to be a resident of the Garden State to gamble online here. All that matters is that you’re within the state lines. The casino sites will utilise geolocation software or location tracking on your mobile device to check that you’re in New Jersey before letting you bet.

Are online casino bonuses available for blackjack?

Yes, blackjack sites in New Jersey offer a wide range of welcome incentives. These include match bonuses, where the site will match your initial deposit up to a certain percentage, and no deposit bonuses, which don’t require any outlay from you at all.

However, it’s crucial to look at the terms and conditions to see what the wagering requirements are for the bonus in question. You’ll almost certainly have to bet a set number of times before being able to withdraw any profits you make from the bonus. Wagering requirements vary a lot from site to site, which is why it’s important to know what the deal is. Bear in mind as well that blackjack may only contribute a limited amount to wagering requirements. Other games, like slots, usually contribute a lot more.

Can I sign up to more than one online casino?

You certainly can, and Compare.bet makes it easy to browse and choose between the best New Jersey blackjack sites available right now. By signing up to multiple sites, you can access a wider library of games – both in terms of blackjack and other casino favourites – and you’ll be able to take advantage of the different welcome bonuses on offer, too.

Is it safe to gamble through online casinos?

We only review and recommend blackjack sites that are licensed and regulated. This means you can be sure that all sites listed on Compare.bet are reputable businesses which are affiliated with Atlantic City casinos and employ industry-standard encryption measures to keep your details and your money secure.

Can I deposit money using PayNearMe?

Yes, many online casino sites in NJ will let you make cash deposits to your account using PayNearMe at participating stores. Other widely accepted methods for depositing funds are Visa and MasterCard debit and credit card transfers, and online transfer services like PayPal and Skrill. It’s always advisable to double-check the casino site accepts your preferred deposit method before signing up.
