Play a variety of Spanish lotteries online
Spanish lotteries have become a favourite of many lottery enthusiasts due to the variety of exciting draws on offer. Let’s take a look at the most popular Spanish lottery games.
El Gordo de Navidad
This is the Spanish Christmas Lottery and is the biggest and best of all Spanish lotteries. El Gordo translates to “the big one” or “the fat one” in English, and this lottery is known as such due to the huge prize pool. The 2019 edition had a total prize fund of an incredible €2.23bn.
El Gordo is actually a raffle, rather than a lottery. This means that the entire prize pool is distributed and there are no rollovers. Rather than buying tickets, players purchase one-tenth shares in tickets, with the prize money being distributed between winning ticket shareholders. Each ticket consists of 10 shares and you can purchase as many shares as you want, though with prices starting from €20 a share, this is one of the most expensive lotteries to play.
To play, you simply select any of the available 5-digit tickets and select the number of shares you want to purchase. There is a wide range of different prize tiers, with many smaller prizes alongside the top prize of €4m which is split between all players with winning numbers. One of the best things about El Gordo is its favourable odds in comparison to other lotteries – you’re around 1,400 times more likely to win the top prize than you are to win the Euromillions jackpot, and you have a 1 in 10 chance of winning any prize.
While it doesn’t offer the biggest jackpot, El Gordo is the world’s biggest lottery in terms of total prize payout.
La Primitiva
This is Spain’s oldest official lottery and is the most popular regular draw. La Primitiva draws taking place every Thursday and Saturday evening. This lottery requires you to pick six numbers between 1 and 49. Each ticket is also randomly assigned a Reintegro number which can bag you a refund if it proves a match.
You’re six chosen numbers and the Reintegro number will all need to match the balls drawn for you to win the jackpot. The €2m minimum jackpot continues to roll over until its won, with the record being when it reached a whopping €101.7m after 56 rollovers. There are 11 prize tiers in total, with the lowest tier having winning odds of 1:10, while the jackpot has odds of 1:139,838,160.
El Gordo la Primitiva
Yep, Spanish lottery names get confusing – bare with us. Despite the similarities in the name, this is a separate lottery to both La Primitiva and the El Gordo lottery. To play, you select five numbers between 1 and 54, as well as one Reintegro number which is needed to win the jackpot.
There are nine prize tiers in total for El Gordo la Primitiva and draws take place every Sunday evening. The jackpot starts at €5m and reached its highest ever value when it hit €33,024,545 in 2014.
BonoLoto
BonoLoto is a smaller Spanish lottery that runs every day of the week apart from Sundays. While this lottery doesn’t quite hit the heights of El Gordo or La Primitiva, with a minimum jackpot of €400,000. The BonoLoto jackpot reached as high as €7,694,919 before, so it still offers the potential for big wins
BonoLoto works in the same way as La Primitiva, so you pick six numbers between 1 and 49 and get a random Reintegro number. There’s a total of ten prize tiers and you’ll need to match all six numbers in order to win the jackpot.
All these lotteries are run by the Loterias y Apuestas del Estado, which oversees all Spanish state lotteries.
Lottery Tickets vs Lotto Betting
The difference between lottery ticket sites and lotto betting
The top Spanish lottery sites on our list are a mix of lottery ticket purchasing sites and lottery betting sites, and it’s handy to know the difference between the two.
When you play at lottery ticket sites, staff based in the country of the lottery purchase tickets from your behalf. When you play at lotto betting sites, you’re wagering on the outcome of the draw rather than buying tickets. Spanish lottery betting sites work on an insurance model under which they insure each bet, so if you’re lucky enough to win the jackpot, the insurance firm pays out to the lottery site which then transfers your winnings to you.
There’s not much difference between the two when it comes to entering lottery draws, the type of site you play at can affect things like how you ticket prices, collect your winnings, payout timeframes and the bonuses available. We’d recommend comparing the features of different Spanish lottery sites to find the one that’s best suited to your playing preferences.
Claim a bonus at Spanish lottery sites
The best lottery sites offer welcome bonuses that new players can use to play Spanish lotteries only. Some of the top deals available include matched deposit deals and cashback offers, so there are plenty of enticing offers to choose from. Learn about Spanish lottery tax
Spanish lottery winnings are tax free up to €40,000, but the Spanish government applies a 20% tax to any portion of winnings that exceed the €40,000 at a rate of 20%. The tax applies to any portion of the prize that exceeds the €40,000 mark. So while any wins under that figure are yours to keep entirely, bigger wins will have a portion deducted.
Let’s look at an example. If you win €50,000, you’d pay a 20% tax on €10,000 of the prize. This means you’d pay €2,000 in tax, leaving you with a total win of €48,000.
Your winnings will be taxed regardless of whether you play at a Spanish lottery ticket site or try your luck at Spanish lottery betting If you play at a ticket site, the prize will be taxed before it gets to you. If you’re playing at a Spanish lottery betting site, the site will pay out an amount equal to the prize after the 20% tax is deducted.
It’s important to remember that your winnings may also be taxed under the laws of your own country. This isn’t an issue for UK and Irish citizens, as all gambling winnings are tax free, but if you live in a country outside of Spain that does tax gambling winnings, you may pay an additional tax on your winnings.

How to collect your Spanish lottery winnings
If you’re playing at a lottery ticket purchasing site, wins under €40,000 are generally credited to your account once the lottery site has received the winnings from the operator. If you do win big, a representative from the Spanish lottery site will contact you to guide you through the collection process.
If you’re playing at a lotto betting site, then most wins will be instantly credited to your account. The procedure for collecting big wins varies from site to site, but you won’t need to travel to Spain in order to collect your prize.
