US Open Golf Preview

The 125th US Open returns to the fabled Oakmont Country Club this week, where the world’s best will attempt to tame one of golf’s most demanding layouts.

Play gets underway on Thursday with Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Rory McIlroy heading the betting at a venue that has crowned legends and humbled many more.

Oakmont’s reputation precedes it: penal rough, slick poa annua greens, and a par-70 layout that exposes any weakness off the tee or with the putter.

Angel Cabrera’s winning score of +5 in 2007 is a reminder of just how brutal this course can be, and with recent renovations, the challenge may be even stiffer for the class of 2025.

Oakmont is set to deliver another classic US Open test – one where patience, accuracy, and a cool head will be rewarded.

Tip 1: Scottie Scheffler to win @ 14/5 (Win Only) with bet365

Scheffler, the world number one, arrives as the clear favourite and with good reason.

The Texan’s relentless tee-to-green excellence, coupled with a red-hot run of form that includes a PGA Championship win as one of three victories in his last four starts, makes him the man to beat.

Scheffler’s driving ranks among the best in the world, and his ability to avoid big numbers – which is vital at Oakmont – should keep him in contention from Thursday morning to Sunday evening.

Tip 2: Justin Thomas win & each-way @ 35/1 (eight places) with bet365

Justin Thomas has been trending in the right direction, with a win at Harbour Town and a runner-up at Philly Cricket Club since the Masters.

While his iron play has been patchy, Oakmont’s expansive greens should mitigate that weakness, and his improved putting this season could prove decisive.

Thomas has the major temperament and shot-making flair to thrive in tough conditions, and his price offers real value for each-way backers.

If his irons heat up, he could easily be in the mix for his third Major title and first US Open crown.

Tip 3: Harris English win & each way @ 66/1 (eight places) with bet365

English has quietly become one of the most reliable performers in big events, making five consecutive cuts in Majors and producing strong results, including a T12 at this year’s Masters.

He won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines South earlier this year and has posted a third, fourth and an eighth-placed finish in the last five US Opens.

Three top 25s in his last four Masters and joint-second in the 2025 US PGA Championship give further credence to the belief that he plays his home Majors very well.

A 12th-placed finish at The Memorial on his last start with an under-par final round suggests the 35-year-old is in good shape to shoot a decent score around Oakmont.
