New York Cosmos sign MLS veteran Adam Moffat

I

t didn’t take long for the New York Cosmos to make their first player acquisition of the new year.

The Cosmos announced the signing of MLS Cup winner and eight-year league veteran, Adam Moffat.

“I had some very positive conversations with [head coach] Gio [Savarese] and the coaching staff,” Moffat said in a club statement. “It’s clear what their vision is in terms of the Cosmos’ playing style and where the team’s headed. I really wanted to be a part of that and am excited to start a new chapter in my career.”

Moffat, 28, has featured for the Columbus Crew, Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders and most recently, FC Dallas.   The Glasgow native made 20 appearances for FC Dallas last season, adding to a total of 171 MLS matches throughout all competitions.

“Adam is a quality midfielder with a tremendously competitive personality and has significant starting experience,” Savarese said. “He adds bite and aggression to our midfield and is going to give us a lot of diversity and options in terms of how we can line up.”

Moffat also shores up one of the weakest areas for the New York Cosmos. A series of injuries to Marcos Senna, Danny Szetela and Joseph Nane hobbled the midfield, leaving New York short on options late in the season.  A proven veteran, Moffat brings a tenacious style that will push Szetela at the defensive midfield spot.
