Euro 2024 kicked off in exciting fashion on June 14th when host nation Germany hammered Scotland 5-1. The 2016 winner, Portugal, will go into this summer’s tournament full of optimism. They are a squad full of talent, and after dominating their qualification group, they will feel very confident before Euro 2024 starts. Portugal won all ten games of their qualification group and scored 36 goals while only conceding 2. If Portugal can continue this run of form, they will be seen as many people’s favourites to win the Euros this summer. Portugal have looked relatively shaky so far. In their opening game, they needed a last-second goal to beat Czechia. After this, they beat Turkey comfortably but then lost to Georgia. Against Slovenia, Portugal needed penalty shootouts to progress to the Euro 2024 quarter finals.

Portugal’s History at the Euros

Portugal were the winners of Euro 2016 when they beat France in the final despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo to injury early in the game. They did not fare so well in 2021 as they were knocked out in the Round of 16 after a loss to Belgium. Portugal were famously runners up in 2004 when Greece defeated them in the final despite going into the tournament at 80/1 odds.

Portugal Euro 2024 Group Breakdown

Portugal were placed in Group F alongside Turkey, Georgia and the Czech Republic. Although it wasn’t entirely comfortable, they topped their group. They beat Turkey comfortably but needed a last minute winner to see off the Czech Republic and lost to Georgia although it was their B team they put out.

Portugal Euro 2024 Schedule

Portugal will play their next match on July 5th when they face France in the quarter final of the competition.

Portugal Odds to Win Euro 2024

Portugal are seen as the sixth favourites to win the European Championship and are priced at odds of 9/1 to win. England are the current favourites for the prize at odds of 15/4.

Top Players For Portugal in Euro 2024

The Portugal squad heading to the European Championships are full of talent in all areas of the pitch. This is actually a far more quality side than the Portugal side of 2016 who came out as winners of the tournament. If Portugal’s players can perform well on the big stage they have a serious chance of winning this year’s European Championship. Below are some of the top players Portugal will be relying on this summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is a far cry from the player he was a few years ago. His pace is nowhere near the same level and his skills seem to have dried up a little. Despite this, he is still a great goalscorer and was the top scorer in the world last season albeit he achieved this while playing in a lesser league. People tend to say he flopped at Manchester United during his second spell at the club but the truth is 18 Premier League goals in 30 games is unheard of at the age of 37. This was also in a Manchester United side who were struggling massively. Had he joined Manchester City instead of United which it looked at one point he was destined to, his second spell in the Premier League would be remembered very differently and would have had even more goals with some trophies to go with them. Ronaldo was however very poor in the last World Cup and ultimately got dropped from the starting lineup in the Round of 16 against Switzerland. They were then knocked out of the World Cup by Morocco in a game Ronaldo again started from the bench. Unfortunately, it looks as though this form has continued into the Euros, Ronaldo has been shocking so far and his performance against Slovenia could see him dropped from the starting lineup. You can bet on Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Euro 2024 Golden Boot at odds of 40/1.

Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes isn’t the most popular player in the Premier League with rival fans hating him and Manchester United fans having mixed opinions on him. When he’s on form he is one of the best midfielders in the league. However, when he’s off the pace, he’s miles off it. He can be reckless with the ball at times which often leads to him losing possession for his team. The facts are though that he creates chances for his team, and a lot of them at that. He was the player who created the most chances in the Premier League this season despite playing in a very poor Manchester United side. In fact, since he joined the Premier League no other player has been close to creating as many chances or big chances as the Portuguese midfielder, not even Kevin De Bruyne. He is also a very passionate player who works incredibly hard for his team which is something Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will certainly appreciate. If Bruno plays at his best this tournament he will be a real asset to Portugal. You can bet on Bruno Fernandes to be player of the tournament at the Euros at odds of 30/1. Bruno has had a decent start to Euro 2024.

Rafael Leao

Rafael Leao has been a real superstar for AC Milan. Playing on the left wing he is full of pace and skill and has a good eye for goal to go with it. He’s an extremely exciting player to watch and grabbed 11 goals and 10 assists in the Serie A this season. He will be a crucial part of Portugal’s attack this summer and I expect to see an exciting performance from him throughout the campaign. Rafael Leao is a major outsider for Player of the Tournament at 100/1 so if you are looking for a longshot bet he could be the one.

Portugal’s Rising Star – Antonio Silva

Antonio Silva is a promising young centre-back who plays for Benfica and with rumours that many top sides are trying to sign him, he will want to put on a good show this summer. Silva has been praised for his strong aerial presence and composure. With Pepe starting to slow down just as it seemed like he never would, Portugal will be looking for a new defender to fill in his boots and Antonio Silva might just be the perfect candidate. Silva’s versatility allows him to fit into various defensive setups such as a back four or a back five, making him a valuable asset for Roberto Martinez. Silva can be backed to win this European Championships Young Player of the Tournament at odds of 50/1.

Portugal Top Scorer Odds for Euro 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo is the Portugal player with the lowest odds of winning the Golden Boot at Euro 2024 with odds of 40/1 with Man United midfielder Bruno Fernandes being seen as the joint most likely to at 40/1. Dutch star Cody Gakpo is the current favourite to come away with the Golden Boot at odds of 4/1 while German star Jamal Musiala is the second favourite.

Portugal Route to the Final

Portugal have confirmed their place in the quarter-finals after beating Slovenia via a penalty shootout

Quarter Finals

In the quarter finals, Portugal will face France. This would make for a fantastic quarter-final viewing as one of the two top teams of the competition would be knocked out.

Semi-Finals

Should they make it to the semi-finals it would be Spain or the host country Germany that they would have to face. Although Spain are probably the better side and they have looked great under Luis de la Fuente, I imagine Portugal would rather not face Germany on their own home soil.

Final

If Portugal makes it to the final of Euro 2024, it will likely be England they will have to face. The Three Lions will be looking to pick up their first-ever European Championship so it would be a very exciting final.

Team Line Up for Portugal at the Euros

Roberto Martinez will have a few tough choices to make over the course of this tournament. Below I will try to predict the starting 11 he will go for.

Goalkeeper

Diego Costa is the starting goalkeeper for Portugal. This was to be expected due to his form at Porto.

Defenders

Joao Cancelo and Diogo Dalot have so fair shared the right back spot with Cancelo also sharing the left back spot with Nuno Mendes. At center back Ruben Dias and the forever-young Pepe have started both games.

Midfielders

Bruno Fernandes has been the main midfielder for Portugal with PSG man Vitinha playing alongside him. Joao Palhina has also started one of the two group games for Portugal.

Attackers

Cristiano Ronaldo is the man leading the Portugal attack however if he continues to play poorly Goncalo Ramos could easily take his place. Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao ave been the two wingers for Portugal.

Comparing Portugal to Other Teams to Win the Euros 2024

Although this Portugal team has lots of quality, winning this year’s European Championship will be a very tough ask due to the number of great football teams also in the competition. Below I will go through some of the other top teams and compare them to this Portugal squad.

England

England go into the tournament as the favourites to win the competition. This England side features great quality players from John Stones in defence to Harry Kane in attack. England as a nation have never won a football trophy in Europe, they were incredibly close in the last tournament but lost to Italy in the final on penalties. Compared to this Portugal side, England definitely have the better squad however I still wouldn’t rule Portugal out of getting past England. You can bet on England to win the Euros at odds of 15/4. England have had a very shaky start to the competition. In their group, they beat Serbia but drew to Denmark and Slovenia. Then in the Round of 16, they scraped past Slovakia thanks to a last-second Jude Bellingham overhead kick.

Germany

Germany are the host nation for this tournament and will be hoping that playing on home soil can be an advantage for them. If you compare the Germany squad to the Portugal one it seems on paper that Portugal have the better one. Germany’s odds to win Euro 2024 are 9/2 which puts them as second favourites. Germany have impressed many this summer with many believing that both them and Spain are the most impressive teams of Euro 2024 so far.

France

France are the team I believe will go on to win Euro 2024. They have shown over the past few years that they know how to get far in international tournaments after winning the World Cup in 2018 and finishing second at the last World Cup in Qatar. They also have the best player in the world right now, Kylian Mbappe. When you compare France’s squad to Portugal’s the French squad looks better on paper. This is understandable because France are arguably the best international team in the world right now. Although Portugal can definitely go on to win this year’s Euros, France are the team I see as most likely to win it. You can bet on France to win the Euros at odds of 9/2. France have not been their usual self so far this summer. They are still yet to score from open play with their one goal scored by an actual French player being a Kylian Mbappe penalty. Other than this they have relied on own goals to win games.
