Since the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), a number of sportsbooks have launched sports betting operations across the nation. Not only are more sportsbooks popping up in states with legal sports betting, but some operators are even launching sports betting apps, allowing bettors to wager on sports from their mobile phones.

Select your state for legal betting app reviews:

While every app offers an interactive user experience and makes it even easier to wager on sports, there are some key points that every bettor should be aware of when choosing which betting app to use.

Creating an account

Almost every US sports betting app has a different sign-up process, but each is created with player safety as a priority. Some apps and website allow you to make an account in a couple of minutes, while others have a slightly longer process and must be done in person at a physical casino or sportsbook.

Whereas some sportsbooks only require basic information like your name, address, date of birth and social security number, other sports betting apps may request a copy of your ID to keep for records. In some stricter states, those who want to create an account must go to a physical sportsbook or casino and provide two forms of ID, usually a driver license and a copy of a bill. A number of sportsbooks also require customers to make a deposit when opening an account with them, and this amount will vary between operators.

Depending on the operator, some sportsbooks require users to deposit a minimum amount of money into an account in order to receive bonuses and sign up offers. Of course, not every operator will require new customers to make a minimum deposit when they create an account, so it’s best to understand the terms before you sign up.

Where you can use sports betting apps

Every US state has its own sports betting laws and regulations, which will affect where bettors may use apps for sports betting. In states, such as New Jersey, bettors are free to use the app wherever they want as long as they are within state lines.

In other states, app users must be connected to the server in the brick-and-mortar casino or sportsbook that operates the platform to make bets. For instance, Mississippi sports betting legislation only allows electronic sports betting to take place on-site in a licensed venue. This means that, if mobile sports betting apps were to launch in Mississippi, bettors would only be able to use them while on casino or sportsbook property. Of course, legislation could change if sports betting apps and legal sports betting in America become more widespread across US states- at the moment many of the legislative bodies and operators are still learning about mobile sports betting.

Sign up offers and bonuses

As more sportsbooks open across US states, operators will need to give bettors an incentive to bet with them, rather than competitors. Sign up offers and bonuses are one of the most popular ways to do this and, whilst these vary between operators, there are plenty of deals to be had. For example, in New Jersey, BetStarsNJ has a new player offer that rewards new customers up to $500. Of course, these bonuses come with terms and conditions, so you should shop around to make sure you’re taking advantage of the best sports betting app sign up offers available.

Banking options

When it comes to topping up an account and depositing money into an account, sports betting apps support a variety of banking options and payment methods. While the best sportsbooks give punters a wide choice of banking options, including cryptocurrencies and e-wallets, like PayPal, it is important that your chosen operator supports your preferred payment method. Some sportsbooks will allow you to top up accounts with cash deposits at physical casinos and sportsbooks, while in other cases you can only deposit money using a standard credit card.

Security

Virtually every legal sports betting app will have security measures in place to protect operators, punters and their money. Of course, different apps will have different security measures in place. While some apps simply rely on the use of passwords, others require punters to use fingerprints to log in on compatible devices. sports betting apps have different security measures in place.

Different platforms

As the US sports betting market is still in its early stages, many operators are still in the process of developing sports betting apps. The process of developing apps can differ between operating systems, which has meant that, in some cases, betting apps have been available for iOS before Android devices. For instance, when New Jersey sportsbooks started launching apps, some operators prioritized Apple products, meaning iOS was the first platform to receive some sports betting apps with Android betting apps being launched at a later date.

Different types of sports betting apps

American sports bettors can bet using two different types of sports betting apps. The first kind is a sportsbook app, such as William Hill’s New Jersey mobile app, which are operated by each sportsbook. Sports bettors may also make wagers using existing gambling apps that integrate sports betting services, like MGM Resort’s app, playMGM. These apps are more common in states like Nevada and New Jersey.

Sports betting features can also be incorporated into state lottery operator app.. Although these aren’t yet in operation, the DC Lottery has plans to launch sports betting via its mobile app in 2019.

App-specific features

Some mobile sports betting apps have special features that set them apart from competitors. There are currently only a handful of sports betting apps that boast unique features, though bigger names in gambling, like Caesars Entertainment, have a VIP scheme for punters using their service, and MGM ’s playMGM allows punters to earn rewards that they can redeem in MGM casinos.

Live sports betting

If you’re looking to bet on sporting events as they’re underway, you’ll probably want a sports betting app with in-game betting options. Not all operators offer live bettings, but those that do tend to allow users to live stream matches as they wager on them. It’s likely that, as the US sports betting market develops, more operators and sports betting apps will offer this feature.

Terms and conditions

It’s vital that punters take time to read through the terms and conditions before signing up to a sports betting app. This fine print will contain information on deposits and withdrawals, as well as minimum bets and how personal information will be stored and used. Terms and conditions might not make for the most interesting read, but they’re certainly worth your time- especially when your hard-earned money is involved.

Where is mobile sports betting legal?

At the moment, only four states permit wagering on sports via mobile apps. These states are:

New Jersey Sports Betting Apps

Mobile sports betting apps can be used anywhere within the state of New Jersey, as long as the bettor is 21 years old, the legal gambling age. Users can sign up for accounts online or in person.
