DC sports betting revenue dips in December

Despite recording an increase in betting handle, the DC Lottery’s sports betting app saw revenue dip in December.

According to the latest figures from the DC Lottery, both William Hill and the DC Lottery’s betting app recorded a month-on-month drop in betting revenue in December.

William Hill vs GamBet

The Lottery’s report showed that bettors in the capital wagered $4.3m via the Lottery’s Gambet app in December representing a 10.3% increase on the $3.9m wagered in November.

Despite the increase in handle the app generated just $807,217 in revenue, down 8.6% on November’s revenue. Gambet bettors managed to win $3.5m back from the lottery in December.

Since launching in May 2020, DC bettors have wagered $18.7m via the Gambet app and won back $15.2m leaving the Lottery with $3.5m in revenue.

The land-based William Hill sportsbook at the Capital One Arena also saw figures dip in December. William Hill’s handle dropped 9.5% month-on-month to $12.4m in December despite processing 15,000 more bets than in November.

William Hill’s sportsbook managed to generate $1.9m in revenue in December which marked a significant drop on the $2.7m generated in November.

Since the William Hill sportsbook opened in July 2020, the venue has taken $61.8m in bets and generated $10.1m in revenue.

Earlier this month, William Hill launched its mobile sportsbook in Washington DC, allowing the operator to expand its presence in the capital.

BetMGM enters the market

The DC sports betting market is expected to become slightly more crowded in the coming weeks after BetMGM announced a partnership with the Washington Nationals which will see the operator open a sportsbook at the team’s National Park home ballpark.

According to the announcement, the sportsbook facility will not be open to fans attending games but supporters will be able to place bets via the operator’s mobile sportsbook app while on the premises.

Once BetMGM launches its mobile sportsbook app in Washington DC the nation’s capital will be home to three mobile sportsbooks. However, the DC Lottery’s sportsbook app, GamBet DC, will be the only one to offer a true city-wide online sports betting experience.
