BetMGM partners with the Washington Nationals

BetMGM, the joint venture between Entain and MGM Resorts has partnered with another professional sports team.

BetMGM, the joint venture between Entain and MGM Resorts International, has inked an “exclusive multi-year partnership” with Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Washington Nationals.

What’s covered in the deal?

Under the deal, the online sportsbook operator will open a physical land-based sportsbook facility within the team’s National Park home ballpark.

According to the announcement, the sportsbook facility will not be open to fans attending games but supporters will be able to place bets via the operator’s mobile sportsbook app while on the premises.

BetMGM will also become the teams’ official sports betting partner and be able to take advantage of branding opportunities at Nationals Park and on the teams’ social media and digital platforms.

The team and the sportsbook operator will also create exclusive benefits for members of each partner’s loyalty schemes, which include MGM’s M Life Rewards and Red Carpet Rewards.

Alan Gottlieb, Chief Operating Officer of Lerner Sports Group, which owns the team, said: “The Nationals are thrilled to expand our strong partnership with MGM Resorts into the sports betting realm.

“As our Official Sports Betting Partner, BetMGM will further enhance the greatest in-venue fan experience in Washington, DC through its state-of-the-art entertainment products and services.  The BetMGM mobile app will enable our fans to engage with the game in new and exciting ways, while the BetMGM Sportsbook connected to Nationals Park will provide Nationals fans and the DC community with a first-class gathering place to celebrate their passion for sports together.”

Matt Prevost, Chief Revenue Officer, BetMGM, said, “This new partnership with the Nationals is our most in-depth partnership with a team and showcases the multitude of ways we’re able to engage fans in and out of stadiums. We’re extremely excited to work together to create unique experiences for Nationals fans and the broader DC metro area during and after games.”

Another sportsbook app in DC

News of BetMGM’s entry into the DC betting market comes after William Hill launched its mobile sportsbook app in the nation’s capital in December 2020.

Once BetMGM launches its mobile sportsbook app in Washington DC the nation’s capital will be home to three mobile sportsbooks. However, the DC Lottery’s sportsbook app, GamBet DC, will be the only one to offer a true city-wide online sports betting experience.

The DC Lottery and its sports betting product, which is powered by Intralot, currently hold a monopoly on the DC betting market. In 2019, it was revealed that the DC Council voted to skip the standard bidding process and grant the district’s sports betting contract to Intralot, granting the Greek company a monopoly on the market.

Despite having a monopoly on the market, the land-based William Hill sportsbook at the Capital One Arena has consistently outperformed the DC Lottery in terms of handle and revenue.
