Pennsylvania betting handle exceeds $100m in August

Things are heating up for sportsbooks in Pennsylvania.

According to figures from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), sportsbooks in the Keystone State took more than $109m in sports bets in August, a massive jump from the $59m wagered in July.

Sportsbooks in the Keystone State managed to generate $9.9m in sports betting revenue up from the $5.1m generated the month prior.

Looking closer at the figures

The FanDuel Sportsbook at Valley Forge Casino was the most popular sportsbook in the state. According to the PGCB figures, more than $37.8m was bet on sports with FanDuel and $3.1m was generated in revenue.

SugarHouse came in second place in August with bettors wagering just under $30.4m and more than $2.5m being generated through sports betting.

Rivers was the next most popular sportsbook in the state posting a handle of more than $21.7m and a revenue of $1.6m.

Parx was the fourth most popular bookie in Pennsylvania last month after handling more than $10.9m in wagers and holding onto $1.3m.

FanDuel Sportsbook dominates

In its first full month of offering online betting in Pennsylvania, FanDuel has established itself as the market leader in the state.

As previously mentioned FanDuel Sportsbook managed to take more than $37.8m in bets. Unsurprisingly, more than $35.5m of those wagers were placed online and via the mobile FanDuel app.

It appears that FanDuel is on track to replicate the success it has seen in the New Jersey sports betting market. FanDuel is the market leader in New Jersey and has managed to outpace competitors like DraftKings, PointsBet, MGM and William Hill.

Online dominating in Pennsylvania

While sports betting went live in Pennsylvania last year, online and mobile betting only arrived earlier this summer. Since then the Pennsylvania betting market has seen tremendous growth and shows no signs of slowing down.

In August, more than 75% of sports wagers were placed at online betting sites and mobile sports betting apps. Of the state’s total betting handle, online wagering accounted for $83.2m of the $109m that wagered. Online wagering also accounted for $6.3m of the state’s revenue for the month of August.

In New Jersey, more than 80% of sports wagers are placed online. If Pennsylvania continues to grow at this rate, it could eventually overtake New Jersey, the largest market for online gambling in the US.
