Variations

Poker Variations

The best new poker sites will offer you a variety of different variations on the game, so let’s have a look at the options available at the top online casinos.

Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is the classic poker game and is the most widely played at new poker sites. Each player is dealt two cards and must make the strongest hand possible out of any combination of their two cards and the five community cards on the table.

Omaha

The aim of Omaha poker is still to make the strongest 5-card hand, but players are instead dealt four cards. The hand must be made up of exactly two of your hole cards and three of the five community cards.

7 Card Stud

With no community cards in this version, each player is instead dealt seven cards and must make the strongest 5-card hand out of their available cards. Players pay antes rather than blinds in 7 Card Stud.

Other Variations

These are the poker variations most often played for real money at poker sites, but they aren’t the only options. Other games available at poker sites and online casinos include Carribean Stud Poker, Casino Hold’em and Pai Gow Poker.

Casino Poker v Poker Software

When you play poker online you will play two key variations, one at a dedicated poker site where you have to download specific software, and in standard online casinos. The key difference is that poker software lets you play against other players in cash games and tournaments just like in a real casino, whereas casino poker is a random number generator (RNG) game.

RNG casino poker is played against the house rather than against real players, meaning that the bluffing element of poker is removed. The best new poker sites will have both variants of the game, with the casino poker game located in the casino section, while the software is found iin the dedicated poker section of the site.

Options

Gaming Options

There’s a range of different ways to play online poker at the best poker sites. Let’s take a look.

Cash Games

Cash games are the most common table type at new poker sites and are where the chips on the table represent their cash value. You can join any table where there’s an empty seat and can even buy yourself back in should you lose too many chips.

Sit and Go Tournaments

These are small, single table tournaments that run constantly at the best new poker sites which start as soon as the table is full and generally have low buy-ins. All players buy-in for the same amount and receive an equal number of chips, playing until one person wins.

Multi-Table Tournaments

Multi Table tournaments are larger scale tournaments which can have almost an unlimited number of players. Each player pays the same buy-in and has the same number of chips, with players split randomly across tables. The number of tables decreases as players are eliminated until just one table remains, from which the winner is determined.

Satellites

At some of the UK’s best online poker sites you can enter satellites, which are smaller buy-in tournaments that players can buy into to participate in higher buy-in tournaments. Winning satellites can potentially get you entry to major events such as the Microgaming Poker Network Tour and even the World Series of Poker Tour!

Freerolls

Playing for Free

Freerolls are usually available at most poker sites and allow you to play for real money without putting any of your cash on the line. Freerolls can be single games or even whole tournaments that allow you to win real cash without the risk of losing any of your own funds. They’re great for new players who want to get to grips with a particular variant without committing to a full game, allowing you to work out strategy and also build up your bankroll. A lot of sites will also allow you to download a free demo version of their poker games. These are instant play games that are ideal for learning the rules and practicing your strategy before you put your cash on the line.

Security

Are New Sites Safe?

Assuming a new poker brand isn’t as trustworthy as it’s more established counterpart is an easy mistake to make. Some of the best new online poker sites are brought to us by operators that have played a hand in running successful gambling operations in the past, from top online casinos to online bookies. Quite often, these operators use their recipe for success to cook up a winning poker site. Even if you come across a brand that’s a complete newcomer to the world of online gambling, there’s one easy way to guarantee that you’re in safe hands. Choosing a licensed site means that you can rest assured knowing everything will run smoothly, from software to payouts.

Bonuses

New Poker Site Bonuses

To gain an edge on the already established names, the latest poker sites often offer bigger and better welcome bonuses. These are designed to catch the eye of new players and pry away experienced pros from their favourite sites.

Matched Deposit

Bonuses like matched deposits are a great way to boost your bankroll, and can even leave you with double your initial deposit to play with. They can also help players get acquainted with a new site meaning that, if you’re interested in seeing what a new site has to offer, bonuses are a great way for you to see what sets them apart from the rest. They will often come with wagering requirements and other conditions attached, however, which will affect how you play so it’s always best to check the terms and conditions before you jump in with a bonus.

Promotions

Existing Player Offers

If you are totally new to the game, poker freerolls are your best friend. These are free to enter tournaments which pay out real cash prizes. All poker sites offer them but there’s quite a bit of variance in the prize pools and player numbers. A simple bit of research into what’s on offer will lead you to the best value games so you can build your bankroll with some free money.

You are also likely to see new poker sites with generous VIP programmes that reward customers for their loyalty. Keeping up to date with what your chosen casino has on offer is the best way to make the most of the promotions they make available.

Innovation

Some of the most established, reputable poker brands out there keep dishing out more of the same to keep players coming back. If the tried and tested works, why switch it up? Especially at the risk of alienating their loyal players. If you’re looking for a poker brand that’s pushing the envelope, new online poker sites might just be your best bet. You’ll find some of the latest software, unique promotions and even fresh visuals and design concepts.

Banking

Payment Options

New poker sites will offer a range of different payment options to suit a range of customer needs. Let’s have a look at what you can expect to see.

Debit Cards

Debit cards are the most popular form of banking method and are arguably the most familiar to online poker players with pretty much every new poker site accepting them as a valid form of payment. It can take up to 5 working days for transactions to be processed and come with all the security measures provided by your bank.

As a result of the Government’s Review of Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility Measures, however, the UK Gambling Commission announced that as of April 14th 2020 credit cards are banned from online gambling.

E-wallets

EWallets are one of the fastest growing banking methods for online players and it’s easy to see why. Services like PayPal, Skrill and Neteller are completely free to sign up to, process transactions far quicker than debit cards and are widely supported by a number of new poker sites. The only drawback, however, is that they can often be excluded from certain bonuses. As such, it is a good idea to check the terms and conditions of an individual bonus before you jump straight in with it.

Mobile

Poker on the Go

A great way for new poker sites to stand out from the crowd is by offering a first class mobile casino experience. Most new poker sites will have a mobile app that has all the same functionality of the regular desktop site meaning you will still be able to play the best range of poker games available on the market today. Some sites even have their own native apps, making your playing experience that bit quicker. If a new poker site doesn’t have it’s own mobile app, then it will most likely have a fully optimised mobile site which will give you the same functionality as the desktop counterpart.

Another great element to mobile poker apps is that push notifications keep you up to date with the best new offers, promotions and games the site has available, meaning you’ll never be out of the loop.
