BetMGM launches in Washington DC via Washington Nationals deal

Residents in the Nation’s capital will now have the choice of three online sports betting products.

The US sports betting brand BetMGM has announced the launch of its sports betting product in Washington DC under a partnership with Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Washington Nationals.

BetMGM, the US joint venture between MGM Resorts and Entain, is now the latest sportsbook operator to launch in the US capital.

BetMGM enters DC

Under the agreement with the MLB team, which was announced in January, BetMGM will be able to offer sports betting via its mobile app in the district.

The sports betting app can be accessed from anywhere within the City but due to local restrictions, players can only place bets when located within a two-block radius of the team’s Nationals Park stadium.

The partnership will also allow for the construction of a BetMGM-branded sportsbook within the stadium later this year.

BetMGM will also integrate MGM Resorts’ M Life Rewards scheme, which will allow users to redeem points earned through gameplay for experiences at MGM properties across the country.

Speaking on the launch, Adam Greenblatt, CEO of BetMGM said: “Launching in Washington, DC at Nationals Park sets the stage for our plans to expand BetMGM within the region, as we’ve already seen great success in Virginia.

“The Washington Nationals have been a fantastic partner, committed to innovating the in-stadium fan experience and we’re looking forward to opening our retail sportsbook at the stadium later this year.”

Alan Gottlieb, Chief Operating Office of Lerner Sports Group said: “As our official sports betting partner, BetMGM further enhances the greatest in-venue fan experience in Washington, D.C. through its state-of-the-art entertainment products and services.

“The BetMGM mobile app will enable our fans to engage with the game in new and exciting ways, while the BetMGM sportsbook connected to Nationals Park will provide Nationals fans and the D.C. community with a first-class gathering place to celebrate their passion for sports.”

A new sportsbook in DC

BetMGM will now join the likes of William Hill and the DC Lottery’s Intralot-powered Gambet DC in offering sports betting in Washington DC.

Last month, William Hill announced the opening of a full sportsbook at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC. In July 2020, the operator opened a temporary sportsbook space inside the facility, complete with self-service betting kiosks and betting windows.

William Hill launched its mobile sportsbook app in the nation’s capital in December 2020 and has since dominated the market despite being restricted by the laws in the jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, the DC Lottery’s sportsbook app is the only one to offer a true city-wide online sports betting experience.

The DC Lottery and its sports betting product hold a monopoly on the DC betting market. In 2019, it was revealed that the DC Council voted to skip the standard bidding process and grant the district’s sports betting contract to Intralot, granting the Greek company a monopoly on the market.
