New Jersey bookies take $273m in sports wagers in June

Despite a lack of major sporting events to bet on, New Jersey sportsbooks have reported strong numbers for June.

According to figures from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, punters in the Garden State wagered more than $273m on sporting events in June, down from $318m in May.

In terms of revenue, New Jersey bookies generated $9.7m a significant drop from $15.5m in May.

A closer look at the figures

FanDuel and DraftKings continue to dominate the state’s sports betting market.

For the fifth consecutive month, FanDuel Sportsbook was the highest performing sportsbook in the state. The land-based sportsbook at Meadowlands, combined with the online sportsbook generated $4.38m in revenue, $2.72m came from its online platform.

DraftKings Sportsbook was the second highest performing sportsbook in the state last month. Under the Resorts Digital license, the DraftKings and BetStars brands generated a combined total of $2.68m in revenue. DraftKings’ land-based book at Resorts Casino Hotel generated just over $34,000 in revenue.

The William Hill sportsbook was the third highest performer last month, taking $1.24m in revenue, with more than $718,000 coming from its online sportsbook.

A year of legal betting

New Jersey’s sports betting market has now been in operation for a full year and sportsbooks in the state have taken a total of $1.98bn in bets. More than 81% of these wagers were placed using online or mobile devices.

These numbers highlight the importance of an online sports betting component and could convince other states without online sports betting to consider expanding their sports betting laws.

New Jersey’s sports betting market has continued to see growth since the state legalized sports betting on 11 June 2018. In May, for the first time ever, New Jersey’s sports betting handle exceeded Nevada’s betting handle. Although Nevada continues to dominate, this goes to show that there is potential for New Jersey, and possibly other states, to overtake Nevada’s sports betting market.
